Tynedale - the most idyllic sporting venue in the country?
John Inverdale, writing in the Telegraph, has suggested that Tynedale could be a serious contender for the title of 'most idyllic sporting venue in the country'.

In his piece, where he acknowledges our promotion to National Division Two, he talks about our 'spectacular Northumberland home', describes our location as 'this glorious part of the North-East' and rightly points out that we are just a few miles from the geographical centre of Great Britain.

Things are really looking good!

Scotland is that big? If you take a line form Scotland to Nigeria, that line is the approximate length of Chile. Chile is really that BIG.

Idyllic, means charmingly simple or rustic. Thus Tynedale is the most charmingly simple or rustic sporting venue in the country.

John Inverdale has obviously seen a lot more grounds than I have, and to a large extent you don't always appreciate things with which you are too familiar, but tucked away in the Tyne valley with the Pennines starting just the other side of the railway line and the Cheviots to the north, any ground that can beat it would be well worth a visit. It is at its best as the leaves change colour, in Autumn sunshine.

I'm sure it's as beautiful as everyone says, QM, and we're looking forward to the trip but Autumn sunshine?  That far north?

From the few photographs I have seen it does look a super setting.

It can be sunny in September, but you should prepare for all four seasons. The temperature could be anything from 5 to 20 degrees.

Google 'Tynedale rugby floods' and click on images to see a view that we hope will never be repeated. You can just make out the goalposts. Tragically, the flood destroyed much of our memorabilia but hopefully the new flood defences that have been installed since then will prevent a repeat of the event. I cannot remember similar floods in my lifetime.

I shall do. I went round and scanned our photos (Caldy) last year, so it gives up something of a back-up.

I had not heard about your floods. Thoughts go back to the father and son killed in the floods at Tewkesbury club house. Caldy won't have a problem with floods. Fire is perhaps the only way our memorabilia could  meet an early end - well that and an alien space ship crash landing.

Just out of shot is the equipment container floating away towards Newcastle.

Presumably Toby of that ilk went the same way as the container until he sailed off to Leicester

Wino,

Presumably the container is still in Newcastle waiting for the dockers to return it.

Toby is known locally as Noah, which seems most apt, but that name does not seem to have caught on in a wider sense.

The container got caught in some small trees fortunately and had an anchor attached. So we didn't have to negotiate for its return. Not sure if there have been any dockers in Newcastle since Harold Wilson was PM. The quayside down the toon is one of the liveliest nightspots in the North of England. Has been my downfall on many an occasion.

...especially when you have had a container load of Newcastle Brown. (it is funny how tastes - or fads - change. Everyone used to drink the old Newky brown; now it is Magners (Rattler for some, Doom for others).

Magners, that wee-wee?  No chance would I ever drink that disgusting hell-spawned muck.  Ever.
Unless of course it was a freebie.
