Pasty. Well I don't know where your friends were standing but I was on the terrace in market Jew street alongside people, who don't normally go to the Pirates games but turned up to cheer the boys and many people out shopping, who were unaware of the parade also stopped and clapped, embarressed NO but very proud and the fact that the town turned out in the numbers they did was heart warming and showed a huge support for the Pirates. |

I have been reading the threads with great interest and i can see everyones point of view, first of all having played for pz/newlyn for about 13 seasons i must say i was quite angry when it was decided to play first at truro then at camborne and also the name change as when dicky first invested money into the club the camborne supporters were really the worst i have faced, and i thought that the mennaye could have been made to accomodate larger crowds but i hate to admit i think it was the right decision to move i dont think there was enough support just in west cornwall, mounts bay was introduced to give local players a chance to play regular rugby who weren't up to national rugby standard but money was invested into the club and look whats happened, are there going to be any players from the mounts bay area playing next season for bay doubtful!! so i cant see why bay supporters can protest about the lack of local players in the cornish pirates squad, i think we should realise how lucky we are to have two teams playing national rugby in west cornwall and just enjoy it!!!! |

I hope that they are successful, that Camborne/Truro whatever works out, it would be good for Cornwall. What would help them would be to be bold enough to say we are no longer Penzance & Newlyn and move everything, offices etc to where they are playing. This would send out a clear statement of who they are and may get supporters from other clubs in Cornwall behind them who will not whilst they are still pretending to be Pz&N to some whilst saying they are no longer Pz&N to others.

IF the Threemilestone Stadium actually ever gets built and IF the CP's actually make it to the top level (2 very big "IF's" I know ) and IF Bay continue to do as well as Lanson or Newbury (another one) then the blindingly obvious route is surely 1. Cornish Pirates to be based entirely at Truro, matches, training, marketing, admin, Development team etc. In other words a commercial enterprise based in Cornwall's most commercially developed town/city in the centre of the County with best access for large numbers and corporate support. 2. Complete merger of Bay and Pz&N into a new entity at a wholly revamped Mennaye to provide National semi-pro and community rugby at all levels in the town. Penzance cannot sustain 2 significant rugby clubs long term. One has a fine team, a hardworking committee ,growing spectator support but no ground, clubhouse, junior teams nor infrastructure. The other has a ground, clubhouse, infrastructure and minis/colts/ etc but no first team nor any spectator support. Leaving aside all the old emotional baggage that is trotted out repeatedly and if it were a business (which it now most certainly is) what else would any sensible business person do? There would be of course be a fair bit of RFU registration redtape to be worked through legally (has been done elsewhere) but the synergy stares everyone in the face. Penzance and Newlyn clubs only managed to play their first game together in 1945 a few days after the dropping of the Atom bomb - lets hope we don't have to be QUITE so drastic next time !! |

Relubbusman, I fear that you and your suggestions may be far too sensible.........

Relubbusman, I agree that the Pirates will no doubt move everything to Threemilestone IF the ground gets built,as it will have training facilities/offices etc But why would they leave the name of Penzance/Newlyn behind, the 'Cornish Pirates' is the 1st xv of that club(which seems a difficult idea for some people to grasp). Why also would Mounts Bay want to merge with Penzance/Newlyn,the Bay have done very well, standing on their own. I think that its more likely that Penzance/Newlyn RFC will still have an admin office based at the Mennaye to oversee its running, there will still be the 2nd xv and colts,mini-juniors and the Bay could be the permanent tennants there. There is also the likelihood that any premiership side will also have to run an academy side,so some games may be played at the Mennaye,as the Threemilestone ground would be shared with Truro football club. Returning to the original thread Pirates have signed a French number 8 Bertrand Bedes from Pau. |

That ground sharing idea will soon go sour when you start churning up the pitch for the footballers, you mark my words.Look at the Madjeski Stadium, the Irish make a complete pigs-ear of that surface, ask Steve Coppell!!.

Merlin, It may not be the prefferred option but at the moment its the only option and why is there so much negativity to the Cornish Pirates on this forum,it seems that no matter what decisions they make ,there is always a negative spin. Why can't we just be happy that a town like Penzance currently has 2 clubs playing National League rugby and both clubs should be working hard in partnership to continue their success. |

I am not being negative, just stating fact thats all.

The name being used, Cornish Pirates" is a marketing tool to convince people from the rest of Cornwall that the club is for them to support, that it is not Pz&N, who they would not support. It has worked, I don't believe they are Pz&N, the marketing bluff has worked: you are not happy about that? I recall all the fuss when Dickie Evans appeared to announce that he was pulling out, many people on the forum wanting to get rid of the dinosaurs- those who claimed the club was still Pz&N. Make your choice, show some courage, have some conviction and stop blurring the issue.

NB, What is wrong with a club having a playing name for its 1st xv as in 'Cornish Pirates',IF the name was left behind, would Mounts Bay want to become PZ & N,I don't think so,as they are doing quite well as they are. With regard to making choices, showing courage and having conviction,I think you'll find that the membership of the club, showed all 3 in abundance, when they voted to support dicky's vision. As far as I am concerned the vision is clear and no-one is being deceived. Do you want us to fail, because IF we do,then you might find a scaled down Pirates back at the Mennaye and where would that leave Mounts Bay. Surely the best solution for both clubs,is to continue to build on their success so far and work closer together to achieve even greater success, for Penzance/Newlyn and Cornwall. |

PP, how can you seriously claim that Penzance has two teams playing National League rugby? That "based in Penzance" stuff simply doesn't wash when the CPs play "home" games in Camborne. I can't believe for a moment that the A30 westbound is chockablock with people rushing down to Westholme to watch the admin going on! You can accuse me of negativity all you wish, that's simply how I see it.

Bop, You are of course entitled to your opinion but the 'Cornish Pirates' are a Penzance based side, that is fact, where they choose to play their games is currently at Camborne, not unlike some Premiership clubs and the reason for doing so has been well documented and debated but some people on here ,seem unable to let that go,on a thread that is meant to be about Pirate signings for next season, the same old tired 'anti-pirate' stuff gets posted. Most comments on here, whether its about the club, the ground, pitch etc always seems to have a negative slant to them, yet most of the replies by Pirates fans about Bay are more positive and seem to genuinely wish the club well and I'm sure you will see a lot of Pirates fans at your games next year, particularly the local derbies. I'd rather read about some positive news and developments between the two clubs and their continued success. |

Don't preach it to me, PP - tell it to some of your fairweather fans, the likes of whom came out with "I couldn't support them when they were a Penzance side" (& I have read it). If that's the kind of "sing when we're winning" support you're happy to attract then far be it from me to say you shouldn't.
Well, they've certainly kept that one quiet - you'd think the West Briton might have picked up on it ![]()

Whats wrong with having a name for the first xv? If as you claim they are Pz&N Pirates then the team had a name, why did they change, to try to decieve the rest of Cornwall. One or the other, make the choice.

That was a very calm rebuttal there, BoP. Well done. To any CP fans who fancy a PoP at Bop, I'd firmly advise against it. What am I saying? Fill yer boots! It should be good for a laugh watching you idiots getting ripped apart by a self-proclaimed dinosaur. BoP even has the T-Rex style short arms, especially when it's his round.

Bop and Newlyn Boy,I am not trying to 'preach' to anyone and I don't think the Pirates are trying to deceive anyone either but at the end of the day,we are free to choose who we support/watch and offer our opinions accordingly. It will be interesting to see how 'Bay' fair this season and IF they are not as successful as in past seasons, whether 'your fair weather fans'(and every club has them) continue to turn up in numbers.(by the way this is not a negative on Bay as I happen to choose to watch both them and the Pirates, when I can). As for the comments by TDH,if he wants to arrange it I am more than happy to debate my opinion on this subject, without referring to other people 'as idiots' just because they have a different opinion than someone else. Maybe its time to return back to the original thread. |
